Night watchman and ghost tours in Munich: which one, and in which language?
Updated October 13, 2026 · 6 min read
For most English speakers the obvious pick is the costumed night watchman tour in English: €19 per person, 4.4 stars from 185 reviews, about 1.5 hours. Most of the night watchman tours compared here are in German, though, and the German ones have far more reviews. So the first question is the language, not the price.

Night watchman tours
Language and operator are what separate these, so read the table with that in mind.
In English. The €19 tour and the group-priced tour are run by the same company and meet at the same place, the Mariensäule in the middle of Marienplatz. The €19 walk is in English and tells of medieval life “from cradle to grave”: a city 400 metres across inside a wall, gates closed from dusk to dawn, a lantern the only light. Its rating is the lowest in the table, 4.4, so read some recent reviews.
The group booking. The €450 listing is priced per group of up to 30, not per person. The listing offers German and English and a private-group option. At €19 a head the public English walk is cheaper unless your group is 24 or more. Its 2,428 reviews are the most of any night watchman tour, but the listing covers both languages, so they do not tell you about the English tour alone.
In German. The €19 torch tour has 4.8 stars from 1,404 reviews and meets on the south side of the Spielzeugmuseum, under the tower. The €14.25 Middle Ages tour is the cheapest adult walk, and it follows the line of the first city wall from the twelfth century, closes four gates and covers punishments and justice; it meets at the Rathaus Apotheke on Marienplatz. Both list children under 12 as not suitable.
Ghosts instead of history
The €22.90 spooky walk is in German, starts at the Frauenkirche’s main entrance and goes through the northern Old Town with stories about the devil’s footprint, a ghost in the cemetery and the Jungfernturm. The listing recommends it from age 12 because of the content.
The €50 ghost walk is the English one. It meets by the doors of the Ludwig Beck department store at the top of the stairs at exit C of the Marienplatz U-Bahn station. The guides do not wear costumes, and the price includes three spirits, with alcohol-free options if you ask in advance. It has 70 reviews, so its 4.7 is thinner than the German scores. A second English walk by the same company, meeting at Jungfernturmstraße and tracing the ruins of the city wall, has only 5 reviews so far.
With children
Two tours are made for children aged 6 to 12: the €15 tour in the table above and a €14 one, of 75 minutes each. Both are in German. In the first, the children must be accompanied by an adult, and it is interactive, though they do not have to take part. If your children do not understand German, the English tours are the realistic choice. The German adult tours list children under 12 as not suitable; for the English ones no age limit is listed, so ask the operator before you book.
Which one to book
- English, history: the €19 tour.
- German, with a large review base: the €19 torch tour.
- German and cheap: the €14.25 Middle Ages tour.
- English and spooky: the €50 ghost walk.
- Children from 6 to 12 who speak German: the €15 tour.
The listings for the €19 torch tour and the €14.25 tour say they take place rain or shine. For the whole range see the city walking tours. If you want the grimmer side of the city, the Third Reich walking tours are a different thing altogether.
Our pick for most travellers: the costumed night watchman tour in English.
