Frequently asked questions

How far is Neuschwanstein from Munich, and do I need a tour?

The castle is in Schwangau, a good two hours from Munich: the train to Füssen takes just over two hours, then comes a bus of about 10 minutes and a walk of about half an hour uphill. You do not need a tour, but a day trip handles the connections – the most-reviewed one, which also visits Linderhof, takes 10 to 10.5 hours and costs about €76.

Can I buy Neuschwanstein tickets on the day?

Only in part. Tickets can be booked online with the castle’s ticket centre for a booking fee of €2.50, regular admission is €21 in 2026, and the entry slot is fixed – anyone more than 15 minutes late is not admitted. Remaining tickets are sold on site on the same day, subject to availability. In high season it is safer to book ahead or to take a tour that arranges the ticket; check the inclusions.

How do I get from Munich Airport to the centre?

The S8 runs from the airport to Marienplatz in about 40 minutes, the S1 in about 50. The airport bus listed on this site costs €13.50, a private transfer several times that. A private transfer pays off with heavy luggage, in a group or on a late arrival.

Is the Dachau Memorial Site free, and is a tour worth it?

Admission to the memorial is free, and you can get there on your own: the S2 from Munich takes about 25 minutes, then bus 726 about 10. The tours from Munich start at about €45, take 5 to 6 hours and sell transport and a guide – worth it if you want the context explained and no changes of train.

Can I visit Salzburg or the Zugspitze as a day trip from Munich?

Both work, but they are long days. Salzburg is just under two hours by regional train; a guided trip by train is listed from €79 for 9.5 hours. The Zugspitze is about an hour and a half by train to Garmisch, then the cable car from Eibsee takes about 10 minutes; guided tours start at about €125 – check whether the cable car ticket is included.

Which Munich walking tour should I choose?

For a first visit the Old Town walk of about 1.5 hours (about €20) covers Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche and the Viktualienmarkt – but the most-reviewed one is in German, so check the language first. History fans take the Third Reich and WWII walk (about 2.5 hours, €29, more than 7,600 reviews); after dark the night-watchman tours are the lighter option.

Is the Eagle’s Nest open?

Only in season: the Kehlsteinhaus is open from early May to late October, and the exact end depends on the weather. In winter it is closed. The tours from Munich take a full day, because Berchtesgaden is about two hours away.

Can I book Oktoberfest through this site?

Some table reservations and tours appear here, but Oktoberfest 2026 ran from 19 September to 4 October; the next one is planned for 18 September to 3 October 2027. Entry to the festival grounds is free – what you reserve is a table in a beer tent, so check the year and what the offer includes.
