Munich car hire: what do excess, deposit and desk extras really mean?

The cheapest headline price is not enough to choose a Munich hire car. Open the Rental Conditions and compare five items: the excess, security deposit, accepted card, fuel policy and charges for every driver. The amounts and age rules vary by supplier and car category, so there is no honest single Munich figure. Compare Munich offers, then read the conditions attached to the exact car before paying.

Excess and deposit are different

The excess is the amount for which the renter can remain liable under the damage or theft terms. CDW can limit that liability, but it is not automatically zero-excess cover. Read what is excluded as well as the headline label.

The security deposit is money the rental company blocks or takes as security for possible excess, fuel, tolls, fines or other charges. It is not the hire price. Discover Cars says the applicable method and amount appear in the specific Rental Conditions and voucher. Its general terms explain that suppliers commonly require an accepted card in the main driver’s name. Do not assume the card used online will satisfy the desk.

Full protection sold by a booking intermediary and cover sold by the rental company can work differently. A reimbursement product may require you to pay the supplier first and claim later; it may also leave the deposit requirement unchanged. The useful question at the counter is not “Am I fully insured?” but “What can still be charged, what deposit will be blocked, and which documents would a claim need?”

What can be added at collection

An upgrade, child seat, additional driver, cross-border permission or local protection can raise the amount paid at the desk. Some offers include an additional driver; others charge by the rental period or day. Every driver should appear on the agreement and meet that supplier’s licence, age and driving-experience rules. Do not rely on a universal minimum age: check the offer you are booking.

Fuel terms also change the real cost. “Full to full” means returning the car at the agreed full level; “same to same” uses the recorded collection level; prepaid fuel usually does not refund what remains. Photograph the gauge at collection and return, and keep the final fuel receipt. Mileage limits, late return, one-way drop-off and travel into Austria are further conditions worth checking for a Munich itinerary.

A five-minute check before payment

Write down the total payable now and at collection. Then note the excess, deposit, exact card requirement, fuel policy, included mileage and named drivers. If you plan Salzburg, ask whether Austria is permitted and whether the rental company supplies what the journey requires. If any answer exists only in a sales conversation, ask for it in the agreement before signing.

At collection, walk around the car in good light and photograph each side, the wheels, windscreen, interior, mileage and fuel gauge. Make sure existing marks appear on the condition report. This is less dramatic than arguing over a photograph after the holiday.

Our recommendation: choose the offer with conditions you can meet, not the lowest teaser price. Compare Munich hire cars and open the Rental Conditions for the exact vehicle.
