Dachau Memorial from Munich: join a guided tour or go on your own?

Going on your own is easy and free. If you want a guide and a fixed plan, take the Dachau Memorial Site tour from Munich: €47 per person, 4.8 stars from 3,218 reviews, about five hours, the public transport ticket included. The tour does not buy you entry, because there is none to buy. It buys the guide, the logistics and a group of people who have the context explained to them on the spot.

What the memorial itself offers, at no cost

Admission to the Dachau Memorial Site is free, and no reservation is needed. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. From Munich Central Station, take the S2 towards Dachau or Petershausen to Dachau station (about 25 minutes), then bus 726 towards Saubachsiedlung to the stop “KZ-Gedenkstätte” at the entrance.

On site:

  • An audio guide costs €5 (€4 reduced), is available in 18 languages and needs a deposit at the desk in the Visitors’ Center.
  • A guided tour by the memorial’s own educators costs €4 and lasts 2.5 hours. In English they run at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily, in German at noon. You buy the ticket at the information desk at least 45 minutes beforehand; reservations are not possible, and places are limited to 30.
  • Plan half a day. The memorial itself says most visitors need that long for the grounds and exhibitions.

Luggage storage is limited, so the memorial asks you not to bring any. Photographing and filming the grounds and exhibition areas without a tripod is allowed for private use; filming is prohibited in the former crematorium, and guided tours and seminars may be neither filmed nor photographed. Parking costs a fee.

What the tours from Munich really sell

So the question is whether you need the transport and the narrative handled for you. Three tours cover most of the demand:

TourFromDurationMeetsIncludesNotes
Dachau Memorial Site tour€475 hoursMarienplatz, in front of the Tourist InformationGuide, public transport ticketEnglish or German
Dachau Memorial half-day trip€455 hoursOperator’s officeGuide, bus and trainEnglish; pickup offered as an option
Dachau Memorial full-day tour€456 hoursMarienplatz, in front of the Ludwig Beck department storeGuide, train and bus fareEnglish; longer on site

The three tours do the same thing. They take the S-Bahn and a local bus with a guide, and spend about three to four hours on the grounds: the Jourhaus gate with its inscription, the barracks and the Bunker, the exhibition and the film. The €45 trips list a guided tour of about three hours (the half-day) and about 3.8 hours (the full-day). A fourth option, a Spanish-language tour, is listed at about €34.

The €47 tour has the most reviews of the three and the clearer meeting point: the guide holds a yellow sign saying “Dachau Memorial Tour”. Its listing also recommends the 1:10 p.m. departure if you want fewer school classes on site. The half-day and full-day listings say their guides are authorised or qualified by the memorial.

Compared with going alone

On your own, the day costs little more than the transit: no admission, an optional €5 audio guide or the €4 memorial tour, and the same S-Bahn and bus. The tour price is therefore mostly the guide and the convenience. The memorial’s own guided tour does much of the guiding for €4 and 2.5 hours, if the English slots at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. fit your day.

Take a Munich tour if:

  • you have one day and do not want to coordinate trains, bus and the 45-minute ticket rule;
  • you want the return trip arranged, since all three bring you back to the city with the group;
  • you would rather have one guide for the whole visit than an audio guide.

Go on your own if you prefer to set the pace, to stay longer, or to skip the commentary and stand in front of the exhibition.

What to know before going

The memorial says there is no special exhibition for children and that some of the content may not be appropriate for children under 13; programmes are for visitors aged 13 and over, and it recommends accompanying younger children. The operators set their own limits on their booking pages: the half-day trip lists children under 13 as not suitable, the full-day tour children under 14. These are operator notes, not an entrance ban at the memorial, but follow the stricter rules if you book.

Mobility: the €47 tour lists itself as wheelchair accessible, and asks anyone with walking difficulties or in a wheelchair to bring a carer and arrive at the meeting point 10 minutes early because a different entrance to the platform is used. The full-day tour lists wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments as not suitable. Ask the operator before you book either one.

Most of the visit is outdoors, so dress for the weather. One listing says no food or drink can be bought within the grounds, while the memorial’s FAQ refers to a gastronomy offer; bring water in any case.
